From the past to the present

Aesthetics and Technology in Building

The previous lesson taken from Pierre Luiggi Nervi’ book addressed a very important issue in the world of architecture. He made a big difference between building technology and architectural aesthetic showing the importance of each of them in an architectural work.He made some researches on architectural phenomenon concentrated in two directions: physical structure of a building and the aesthetic aspect of it.He finally came to the conclusion that a a technically perfect work might not be aesthetically impressive, but aesthetically perfect work is excellent from the technical point of view as well. And by this fact we learn that good technology is necessary but not a sufficient condition for a Good Architecture.

Usually building technology define conditions which make use of solid materials, define spaces suited to particular functions and protect the structure from external elements which should be stable and lasting, satisfying the needs for which it was build and maximum result with minimum means.

Building correctly should include 1. stability: Stable resistance to loads and external forces can be achieved by means of structure easily perceived or by means of technical artifices and unseen structures. Stability of Construction can be employed to contribute to a desired architectural and aesthetic expression. 2. Durability: The proper choice and use of materials constitute the first condition for achieving durability.Seeing the materials correctly used, influences the general impression produced by a work of architecture.

3. Function and maximum results with minimum means: They are the results of proper proportioning of sizes and spaces, relationship of spaces, richness of ornament and preciousness of materials with respect to the purpose the building will be used.

In ancient greek the space between columns is determined by spanning capability of the monolithic architraves. Greeks and Egyptians were limited by marble and stone materials and by elementary static scheme which their technician could understand. While the Romans could cover vast public spaces with concrete vaults.A reconstruction of the interior of the Basilica of Maxentius,Rome is a demonstration of  this. During the Gothic period it is best seen the tie between the Aesthetics and Technology.

In the Eiffel Tower the circular arches at the structure underneath were added as a purely aesthetic element, but without them the tower wouldn’t have the same impression to our eyes.
